How to edit PDF metadata
Short answer: drop your PDF above, read its current metadata in the form, edit the title, author, subject or keywords, and click Save metadata. The modification date is updated automatically.
- Choose the PDF whose metadata you want to edit — it stays in your browser and is never uploaded.
- Read the current metadata shown in the form, including the read-only Creator and Producer fields.
- Edit the Title, Author, Subject and Keywords. Leave a field blank to clear it.
- Click “Save metadata” and download the updated PDF.
Why edit PDF metadata?
Fix what readers and search show — a PDF exported as “Untitled” or “Microsoft Word — Document1” looks sloppy in a reader's tab and in search results; the real title fixes it. Take proper credit — set the author to your name or organisation. Make files findable — keywords and a clear subject help you (and others) find the document later. If the document's text itself needs fixing, use our PDF editor first — metadata only describes the file, it doesn't change the pages.
Frequently asked questions
Is my PDF uploaded anywhere?
No. The entire edit runs in your browser with JavaScript — your PDF never leaves your device, which makes this safe for sensitive documents.
What is PDF metadata?
Metadata is the document information stored with a PDF: Title, Author, Subject and Keywords, plus technical fields like Creator, Producer and the modification date. It describes the file but is not part of the visible pages.
Where does the title show up?
In the PDF reader's tab or title bar, in file-manager previews, and in search results — which is why a real title matters more than the file name.
Can I change the Creator and Producer?
No — those are shown as read-only. Creator records the program that made the PDF; this tool leaves it untouched. Producer is set to the PDF library used to save the file, which is standard behaviour for every PDF editor.
Does editing metadata change the pages?
No. The page content, images and annotations are byte-identical except for the updated information dictionary and modification date.
How do I clear a metadata field?
Delete the text in the field and save — a blank field is stored as empty.
Will keywords help my PDF rank in search?
Keywords alone have little search effect, but an accurate title and subject help people (and search engines) understand what the document is, which is worth doing.
Why does my PDF show the wrong title in the browser?
Browsers show the PDF's embedded Title metadata, not the file name. Edit the Title field here and the browser tab will show the correct title.
