Edit scanned PDF text online free
Short answer: a scanned PDF is just photos of pages — there is no real text to edit. This tool reads every page with OCR, then lets you fix the recognized words: tap any word or paragraph, retype it, and the replacement is repainted onto the scan matched to the original print — closest font by glyph-shape comparison, calibrated size, sampled ink color. Everything runs in your browser; your scan never leaves your device.
How it works
1. Drop your scanned PDF onto the box (or tap it on your phone to pick a file, or tap Load sample scan to try instantly) and pick the matching OCR language. The file is read locally — nothing is uploaded. 2. Every page is read automatically: tap a page, tap any recognized word, retype it and click Apply — or switch to Paragraph mode, tap a paragraph and retype the whole block. 3. The replacement is repainted onto the scan to match the original print. 4. Click Download edited PDF — or Download searchable PDF (invisible text layer added) or the recognized text as .txt.
If you upload a PDF that already has selectable text, this tool says so and points you to the text-PDF editor instead — editing real text objects is always cleaner than repainting a scan. Password-protected PDFs can’t be opened here — the tool says so plainly instead of failing silently. Very large scans (hundreds of pages) may strain phone browsers; edit in smaller batches if needed.
What is a searchable PDF?
A searchable PDF is a “sandwich”: the visible layer is your original scan, pixel for pixel, and hidden directly on top of it sits real text produced by OCR. Because the text layer is fully transparent, you see only your scan — but your PDF reader, Ctrl+F, and copy-paste all see the text. That’s why scanned contracts, old books, and photographed paperwork become usable documents instead of dead images. This tool’s Download searchable PDF button builds exactly that sandwich, free, on your own device — paid desktop tools sell the same workflow.
One honest limit: the invisible text layer uses a standard PDF font, which only covers Latin scripts. If you OCR Arabic, Hindi or Chinese, those words still land in the .txt download in full — but the PDF’s hidden layer keeps just the Latin-script words so the file stays valid. The visible scan is untouched either way.
Get the best results from scans
Everything here starts with OCR — and OCR is pattern matching, so scan quality decides the outcome. Scan at 300 DPI if you can — this tool renders pages at 150 DPI internally, and starting from a sharp source matters more than anything. Straighten pages — skewed text is the #1 accuracy killer. Boost contrast — dark text on a clean light background reads best; gray, shadowy phone photos of documents are the hardest input. Pick the right language — the English model on a Spanish document produces confident garbage. Typed beats handwritten — the engine reads print reliably and handwriting barely at all. And proofread anything that matters: the .txt download exists so you can fix the occasional misread before relying on the text.
Frequently asked questions
How do I edit text on a scanned PDF?
Upload your scanned PDF and pick the OCR language — every page is read automatically. Tap a page, tap any recognized word, retype it and click Apply; or switch to Paragraph mode, tap a paragraph and retype the whole block. The replacement is repainted onto the scan to match the original print. Then download your edited PDF — or a searchable PDF with an invisible text layer, or the recognized text as .txt.
Will the edited text look like the original scan?
The replacement is matched to the original automatically: the closest font is picked by comparing glyph shapes, the size is calibrated to the original ink height, the ink color is sampled from the original print, and the text is anchored to the original word’s left edge and baseline. On clean scans the edit blends in. It is a repaint rather than the original embedded font, so under extreme zoom a trained eye may spot it.
What is a searchable PDF?
A searchable PDF looks exactly like the original scan, but every word on the page is real, selectable text hiding invisibly behind the image. You can Ctrl+F to find words, select and copy text, and search engines and document tools can index it. This tool’s “Download searchable PDF” button creates one with the standard “sandwich” technique: the scanned page image plus an invisible OCR text layer.
How accurate is the text recognition?
On clean, straight scans of printed text it is typically 95%+ accurate. Accuracy drops on skewed, blurry or low-contrast scans, tiny text, decorative fonts, and handwriting, which the engine cannot reliably read. The .txt download lets you proofread and fix anything important.
Which languages can it recognize?
English, Spanish, French, German, Arabic, Hindi and Chinese (Simplified). Pick the right language before the pages are read — the wrong language model produces garbled output. Its data file downloads once (a few MB) and is cached in your browser.
My PDF already has selectable text — is this the right tool?
No — use our
PDF editor for text-based PDFs instead. It edits the real text objects inside the PDF with the exact original font, which is always cleaner than repainting a scan. If you upload a text-based PDF here, this tool detects it and points you to the PDF editor automatically.
Is my scanned document uploaded to a server?
No. The PDF renderer, the OCR engine and the PDF builder all run entirely in your browser — your document never leaves your device, is never sent to a server, and is never stored. That is the whole point: scanned contracts and records stay private.
