Honest note: like a real paper scan, every output page is an image — the text in the downloaded PDF won’t be selectable or searchable. The content itself is unchanged; only the look is.
🔒Private by design. Everything runs in your browser — your PDF is never uploaded, stored or tracked.
Quick answer: drop your PDF above, pick a preset (Subtle, Realistic or Heavy copier), check the live before/after preview, and download — every page is re-rendered with a slight random tilt, grain, grayscale and paper tint, right in your browser. No signup, no upload.

Make a PDF look scanned online free — the scanner effect

Short answer: drop your PDF into the box above, pick the Realistic preset (or tune tilt and grain yourself), check the live before/after preview of the first page, then click Download scanned PDF. Every page is re-rendered at print resolution with a slight random tilt, fine grain, grayscale, warm paper tint, soft focus and a subtle vignette — the classic flatbed-scanner look. Everything runs in your browser; your document is never uploaded.

How it works

1. Drop a PDF onto the box (or tap it on your phone). 2. Choose a preset — Subtle for barely-there, Realistic for an authentic flatbed scan, Heavy copier for the old-office-machine look — or adjust the tilt and grain sliders and the grayscale / soft-focus / paper-tint / vignette toggles yourself. 3. The before/after preview of the first page updates live as you tune. 4. Click Download scanned PDF — each page is processed and rebuilt into a new PDF whose filename ends in -scanned.

Under the hood, each page is rendered at 150 DPI, the effects are painted on with canvas, and the page is re-embedded as a JPEG at scanner-like quality — which is exactly why the result feels authentic rather than filtered.

When a scanned look matters

The most common reason is bluntly practical: portals, employers, banks and government forms that ask for “scanned copies.” A pixel-perfect digital PDF can get flagged by upload validators or questioned by a reviewer expecting paper. Other everyday cases: signed offer letters and contracts (a scan reads as “this was printed, signed and returned”), expense receipts, certificates, and any form where the paper trail is part of the trust. One boundary to respect: this changes how a document looks, never what it says — don’t use it to misrepresent a document’s origin where that matters legally.

Realistic vs heavy: choosing the right preset

Realistic (the default) is the safe choice for submissions: 0.6° of random tilt per page, moderate grain, soft focus and a warm tint — it reads as “fed through a decent scanner” without looking damaged. Subtle keeps the tilt at 0.3° and light grain for formal documents where you want just a hint of paper. Heavy copier pushes tilt to 1.2°, doubles the grain and deepens the vignette for that well-worn office-copier character — fun for creative work, risky for a visa application. When in doubt, preview the first page and ask: would a tired clerk believe this came off a scanner? If yes, ship it.

Frequently asked questions

What does Make PDF Look Scanned do?
It takes a clean, digitally-created PDF and re-renders every page with the imperfections of a real paper scan: a slight random tilt per page, fine grain, optional grayscale, a warm paper tint, soft focus and a subtle vignette. The layout, text and page count stay exactly the same — only the look changes.
Why would I want my PDF to look scanned?
Some portals, employers, banks and government forms specifically ask for ‘scanned copies’ of documents, and a crisp digital PDF can get flagged or rejected. A scanned look also reads as more authentic for signed forms, receipts and certificates.
Does it change my document's content?
No. The effect changes only the appearance — every word, number, signature and layout stays exactly where it was. Use the before/after preview of the first page to confirm the look before downloading.
Will the text still be selectable in the scanned PDF?
No — and that is honest by design. Like a real paper scan, each output page is an image, so text cannot be selected or searched. If you need a searchable scan instead, use the Searchable PDF tool.
Should I use color or grayscale?
Real office scanners usually default to grayscale for documents, which is why this tool enables it by default. Turn it off if your document relies on color — charts, stamps or highlighted sections.
How strong should the effect be?
Start with the Realistic preset — a 0.6° random tilt per page, moderate grain and soft blur reads as an authentic flatbed scan. Subtle is safer for formal submissions; Heavy copier mimics an old office copier with stronger tilt, grain and contrast.
Is my PDF uploaded anywhere?
No. Rendering, effects and rebuilding all happen in your browser with pdf.js and pdf-lib — your document never leaves your device, is never sent to a server, and is never stored.
Is it free? Are there limits?
Yes — free with no signup. There is no page-count limit in the tool itself, but very large PDFs (60+ pages) take longer and use more memory, so phones may struggle with huge files.
