How Free Are "Free" PDF Editors? We Tested 27 Editors

Published October 12, 2026 · By Ahmad Parvez

Short answer: of 27 PDF editors marketed as "free," 37% require you to create an account before editing a single word — and 78% upload your file to their servers. Only a handful are genuinely free with no signup.

The headline numbers

37%
require signup before you can edit anything
78%
upload your file to their servers
41%
paywall basic text editing or cap it hard
5
are genuinely free: no signup, no watermark

What we found

Text editing — the core feature a PDF editor exists for — is the feature most likely to be paywalled. Smallpdf, PDFfiller, Nitro, Foxit, PDFelement and Soda PDF all gate actual text editing behind paid tiers or trials, while marketing themselves as "free."

PDFfiller has no free plan at all — only a paid trial — despite "free PDF editor" marketing. PDF Buddy gives you 3 documents a month in exchange for a social-media share: literally trading edits for promotion.

The most striking privacy finding: AvePDF is free with no signup, but its own Privacy notice on its tool pages states free users' files are retained and used "to develop and improve our services, including to train our models." The edit costs nothing; your data is the price.

Fair credit where due: PDF24, Sejda, DeftPDF and PDFgear (desktop) are genuinely free — no signup, no watermark, no catch we could find. EasePDF qualifies with a caveat: its free tier has tightened to 2 tasks per day.

Why we published this

We build a free PDF editor that runs entirely in your browser — no signup, no uploads, no watermark. We wanted to know how unusual that actually is. Turns out: very. If you're a blogger or journalist, cite anything above freely with attribution to ToolVaultly.
