Quick answer: decimal hours = hours + (minutes ÷ 60). So 7h 30m = 7 + 30/60 = 7.50 hours — the format payroll systems need. The calculator above converts either direction instantly, with an optional pay estimate.

How to convert hours and minutes to decimal

Short answer: divide the minutes by 60 and add the hours. 7h 30m → 7 + 30/60 = 7.50. 1h 45m → 1 + 45/60 = 1.75. That decimal is what payroll software multiplies by your hourly rate.
  1. Take the whole hours as-is. 7 hours stays 7.
  2. Divide the minutes by 60. 30 minutes ÷ 60 = 0.50. (45 minutes ÷ 60 = 0.75; 15 minutes ÷ 60 = 0.25.)
  3. Add them together. 7 + 0.50 = 7.50 decimal hours.
  4. If you have seconds too, divide by 3,600. 2h 30m 45s = 2 + 30/60 + 45/3600 = 2.5125.
Decimal hours = Hours + (Minutes ÷ 60) + (Seconds ÷ 3,600)

Examples: 7h 30m = 7.50 · 1h 45m = 1.75 · 8h 15m = 8.25

Decimal to hours converter

Short answer: the whole number is your hours; multiply the remainder by 60 for minutes. 7.75 → 7 hours 45 minutes (0.75 × 60 = 45). 8.5 → 8 hours 30 minutes. Switch the tool above to "Decimal → time" to convert instantly.

A decimal to hours calculator is just this conversion in reverse — the tool above handles both directions. The math: floor the decimal for whole hours (7.75 → 7), take the fractional part (0.75), multiply by 60 (45 minutes). If rounding pushes minutes to 60, the tool rolls them into the hours (8.999 → 9h 0m).

Hours to decimal in Excel

Short answer: if the time is in A1, use =A1*24 and format the cell as a number. 7:30 → 7.5. Going backwards, =A1/24 formatted as time turns 7.5 into 7:30.

Excel stores times as fractions of a day, so multiplying by 24 gives decimal hours. For a text entry like "7:30" in A1, =A1*24 returns 7.5 — format the cell as a number with two decimals for 7.50. If you just need a one-off conversion without formulas, use the calculator above instead.

Weekly hours calculator

Short answer: a weekly hours calculator totals your Mon–Sun shifts — the timesheet version of this page. Use our weekly hours calculator: enter each day's clock-in, clock-out and lunch minutes for the full week in one grid, including breaks, overnight shifts and overtime. For a single duration instead, use our elapsed time calculator.

Weekly hours searches usually mean one of two things: a freelancer adding up billable days, or an employee filling in a timesheet. Either way the workflow is the same — convert each day to decimal hours with this page (7h 30m → 7.50), then sum the seven values. Our dedicated weekly hours calculator does the whole week in one grid, including breaks and overtime.

Timecard calculator with lunch

Short answer: a timecard with lunch needs the duration minus the break: (end − start) − lunch = paid hours, then convert to decimal. 9:00 AM → 5:30 PM with a 30-minute lunch = 8.5 − 0.5 = 8.00 paid hours.

Timecard calculator with lunch is the parent topic behind this whole keyword family — it bundles the duration, the break deduction and the decimal conversion. Pair the tools: use our elapsed time calculator for the exact duration (overnight shifts handled), subtract your lunch, then convert with this page. If the week included overtime, our overtime tax calculator estimates the 2025–2028 federal tax treatment of the premium half.

More time calculators

Short answer: this page is part of ToolVaultly's growing time cluster — duration math, timestamps, sleep and overtime.

Time calculator searches split into a few jobs, and we cover them: our elapsed time calculator finds durations between any two dates and times (the 86K-volume parent topic), the Unix timestamp converter translates epoch seconds to readable dates, the sleep cycle calculator works backwards from wake time, and the overtime tax calculator handles the tax side of extra hours. If you're really asking for an hours calculator in the payroll sense — hours in, pay out — this page plus the optional rate field is exactly that.
