How to convert standard time to military time

Short answer: AM hours stay almost as-is (just pad with a zero); PM hours add 12. 9:30 AM → 0930. 3:00 PM → 1500. The only specials: 12:00 AM → 0000, 12:00 PM → 1200.
  1. For AM times (12:00 AM–11:59 AM): drop the AM, write the hour as two digits. 9:30 AM → 0930. The one exception: 12:xx AM becomes 00xx — 12:30 AM → 0030.
  2. For PM times (12:00 PM–11:59 PM): add 12 to the hour, drop the PM. 3:00 PM → 1500, 11:45 PM → 2345. Noon itself stays 1200.
  3. Remove the colon. Military time is written as four digits: 0930, not 09:30.
AM: military hour = hour % 12  (12 AM → 0)
PM: military hour = (hour % 12) + 12  (12 PM → 12)

Examples: 1:30 PM → 1330 · 12:00 AM → 0000 · 8:00 PM → 2000

How to read military time

The converter above pronounces every result for you — try 1730 or 0000.

Military time calculator

Frequently asked questions

What is 1300 in military time?
1:00 PM. For any military hour from 1300 to 2359, subtract 12: 13 − 12 = 1 PM. Enter 1300 in the converter above and it also shows the pronunciation: "thirteen hundred hours."
What time is 1500 in military time?
3:00 PM. 15 − 12 = 3 PM. Military time keeps counting past noon instead of resetting, so afternoon hours are just the 12-hour time plus 12.
What is 0000 in military time?
Midnight — 12:00 AM, the start of the day. You may also see midnight written as 2400, which means the end of the day. Both refer to the same moment.
What is 4pm in military time?
1600. Add 12 to PM hours: 4 + 12 = 16, so 4:00 PM becomes 1600 in military time, pronounced "sixteen hundred hours."
What is 2000 in military time?
8:00 PM. 20 − 12 = 8 PM. Any military time from 1300 onward converts back by subtracting 12 and adding PM.
How do you read military time?
Say the hour followed by "hundred hours": 1300 is "thirteen hundred hours," 0700 is "zero seven hundred hours." With minutes, say the hour then the minutes: 1330 is "thirteen thirty." Midnight (0000) is "zero hundred hours."
What is military time?
Military time is the 24-hour clock written as four digits with no colon and no AM/PM. The day runs 0000 (midnight) to 2359. Morning hours match the 12-hour clock (9:30 AM = 0930); afternoon and evening hours add 12 (3:00 PM = 1500). It removes all AM/PM ambiguity, which is why the military, hospitals, aviation and emergency services use it.
How do I convert military time to standard time?
If the hour is 00–12, keep it and add AM (00 becomes 12 AM, 12 stays 12 PM). If it is 13–23, subtract 12 and add PM: 1800 → 6:00 PM. Switch the converter above to "Military → standard" to do it instantly.
