How many rolls of wallpaper do I need?

Short answer: Count your strips — total wall width in inches ÷ roll width, rounded up. Find drops per roll — roll length ÷ (wall height + pattern repeat), rounded down. Rolls = strips ÷ drops per roll, rounded up. A 12 × 8 ft wall with a standard 20.5 in × 33 ft roll needs about 2 rolls with no pattern repeat, 3 rolls with a 12 in repeat.

How to measure your walls

Measure the length × height of each wall in feet — wallpaper goes on walls, so you measure wall by wall, not floor area. For a full room, add every wall as a separate row above; the calculator totals the width for you. Ignore doors and windows unless they're very large (a full picture window, say); standard doors and outlets don't change the roll count because strips are rounded up anyway.

Pattern repeat and standard roll sizes

Pattern repeat is the vertical distance before the design starts over. It's printed on the roll label — 0 for plain or textured papers, often 6–24 in for bold prints. Every strip must be cut longer by one full repeat so the pattern lines up at the seams, which is why patterned wallpaper needs noticeably more rolls than plain.

Roll typeWidthLengthTypical coverage
US single roll20.5 in16.5 ft~28 sq ft
US double roll20.5 in33 ft~56 sq ft
European roll20.9 in33 ft~57 sq ft

One extra roll beyond the calculated amount is standard decorator practice — it covers cutting mistakes and leaves you matching stock for repairs. Rolls are printed in dye lots, so buy everything at once: a roll ordered later may be a slightly different shade.

Frequently asked questions

How many rolls of wallpaper do I need?
Measure each wall's length and height in feet, and note your roll's width, length and pattern repeat. The calculator works in inches: it finds the longest strip you need (wall height plus one pattern repeat), counts how many strips fit across your walls, divides them into rolls, and rounds up — you can't buy part of a roll.
What is pattern repeat in wallpaper?
Pattern repeat is the vertical distance before the design starts over, printed on the roll label (often 0 for plain papers, up to 24 inches or more for bold patterns). Every strip must be cut longer by one full repeat so the pattern lines up at the seams — which means fewer drops per roll and more rolls overall. How much wallpaper do I need for an accent wall?
Treat the accent wall as a single wall: enter its length and height, your roll's width, length and pattern repeat. For a typical 12 × 8 ft wall with a standard 20.5 in × 33 ft roll and no repeat, you need 8 strips — about 2 rolls.
Should I buy extra wallpaper?
Yes — buying one extra roll beyond the calculated amount is standard advice. It covers cutting mistakes and gives you matching stock for future repairs. Rolls are printed in dye lots, so a roll bought later may not match exactly.
How do I measure walls for wallpaper?
Measure the length and height of each wall in feet — wallpaper goes on walls, so you measure wall by wall, not floor area. Ignore doors and windows unless they're very large; the calculator rounds up anyway.
