Meters to feet: the conversion everyone looks up
Meters-to-feet is the single most searched length conversion because the US still builds, flies and plays sports in feet while the rest of the world — and all of science — works in meters. The factor 3.28084 comes from the exact international definition: 1 foot is 0.3048 meters, no more, no less. So 1 meter = 1 ÷ 0.3048 = 3.2808399 feet. For rough mental math, "multiply by 3.3" lands within 1%.
Kilometers to miles
The kilometer–mile split follows the same US/rest-of-world divide: road signs, running races and car odometers. A marathon is 42.195 km, which is why it converts to the odd-looking 26.2188 miles. The exact factor: 1 mile = 1.609344 km, so 1 km = 0.621371 mi. Mental shortcut: "multiply km by 0.6" gets you within 4%.
Centimeters to inches
This is the sewing, crafting and screen-size conversion: patterns, waist measurements and phone dimensions are metric in most of the world and imperial in the US. Because 1 inch is defined as exactly 2.54 cm, this conversion has no rounding ambiguity at the definition level — any disagreement between converters is just display rounding.
Centimeters to feet: heights
Height is where cm-to-feet matters most: medical records, ID documents and dating profiles on one side; feet-and-inches on the other. Note that "5.25 feet" is not how anyone states a height — the converter above gives you the decimal, and the rule of thumb is: the whole number is feet, multiply the remainder by 12 for inches (0.2493 × 12 ≈ 3 in, hence 5 ft 3 in for 160 cm).
Inches, feet and yards: inside the imperial system
Imperial-to-imperial trips people up because the factors are irregular (12, 3, 1760, 63360) instead of powers of ten. The most useful ones to memorize: 12 (inches per foot), 36 (inches per yard) and 5,280 (feet per mile). A 5 ft 3 in person is 63 inches total — feet × 12, plus the leftover inches.
Millimeters and small measurements
Millimeters rule engineering, 3D printing and drill bits; decimal inches rule US machining. The 25.4 bridge between them is exact by the 1959 international agreement, which is why "mm to decimal inches" never has definition disputes — only rounding choices. For screen and print work, note that CSS defines its own inch (96 px), which is unrelated to the physical inch.

How length conversion works
The meter itself is defined by the speed of light (the distance light travels in 1/299,792,458 of a second), and since 1959 the imperial units have been defined as exact metric fractions — not measured against a physical bar. That means length conversion has no estimation in it: convert to meters first, then to the target unit, and the only choice is how many decimals to display. This converter shows up to 6 decimals for small values and 2 for large ones, trimming trailing zeros.
Two traps to avoid: the US survey foot (0.3048006 m), which differs from the international foot by 2 parts per million and still appears in old land records; and the mil, which is a thousandth of an inch (0.0254 mm) in engineering, not a millimeter — the converter above includes both so you can't mix them up.
